Nestled in the hills surrounding Pretoria, the suburb of Arcadia provides a refuge from the urban hustle of the capital. Within this Jacaranda lined setting, stands a gracious villa, a landmark of elegance and tranquillity dating from the turn of the previous century. The Guest House is situated at 184 Pine Street in the quiet suburb of Arcadia, one block east of the Union Buildings, amongst a number of embassies, only 10 minutes from the Pretoria CBD.
The main residence was originally built in 1890. It has a Victorian style and is one of a few houses from this period still in existence. The building has undergone a number of restorations, but the character of the house has not changed. Soaring moulded ceilings, period wooden doors and windows, stained glass and antique furniture give the main residence’s interior a warm glow.

Hannes Meiring describes this residence as follows:
“A short distance from the Union Buildings, in Pine Street is a house at present known as Melvin Residence – very different indeed from the Union Buildings. The house reminds one of the ostrich palaces of Oudtshoorn and is a rather amusing conglomeration of styles that were popular at the beginning of the century: decorative wooden railings around the stoep, a near classical gable and ornamental plaster work above the bay window, tall chimneys and a stairway that widens towards the bottom and is decorated with pot plants. Today genuine Victorian houses such as Melvin Residence are once again appreciated.”
