The main residence was originaly built in 1890. Around 1930, Mr McCormack, one of the previous owners, built the first "outside rooms" and turned it into a boarding house (also referred to as a gentlemen's quarters). The boarding house consisted of 10 rooms with two communal bathrooms. The boarding house was known as Melvin Residence (Melvin Residensie in Afrikaans).

Piet and Elize, the current owners, decided uprade the boarding house annex to be used for guest accommodation.

We discovered this original sign during renovations to the main residence.

The story board below highlights some of the work the was done in order to turn this dream into a reality.

Some of the internal walls were demolished and the windows with a view of the neighbour's back yard were removed.

The roof and some of the trusses were replaced. The original stoep was demolished and enlarged. In the background the new linen room is taking shape.

The wall that used to separate the boarding house from the main house was also demolished.

All the demolishment resulted in a mountain of rubble. Some of it was used as back fill. The rest had to be removed. We used 9 truck loads of 8 tons, and 15 waste bins of 6 cubic meters each to remove the rubble from the building site!

This view shows the new roof and the enlarged stoep being prepared.

The new stoep now has a roof and finishings
